Performance comparison against the S&P 500
The Performance application compares an initial investment in a selected portfolio to an initial investment of the same amount in the S&P 500.
What the Performance app computes
The Performance app is intended to provide a direct visual comparison between a selected portfolio and the S&P 500 using the same starting investment amount. This gives the user a simple way to review relative growth paths, performance gaps, and period-by-period differences.
Same initial investment
Compare the selected portfolio and the S&P 500 using the same starting dollar amount.
Portfolio growth path
Show how the selected portfolio compounds through time under the application assumptions.
Benchmark context
Use the S&P 500 as a broad-market reference point for the selected portfolio path.
The selected portfolio has dividends reinvested back into the portfolio, while the S&P 500 comparison does not. Therefore, this comparison is not a pure apples-to-apples comparison; it is closer to comparing apples to oranges. The result should be interpreted with that difference in mind.
